Starting in 2016, Zion Light has used art such as Spoken Word Poetry for Activism and Civic Engagement
Zion Light competed in the 2017 Youth Speaks Teen Poetry Slam, in which he made it to the second round of the Semi-Final round.
The poem that competed, “A MESSAGE” was then published in the first anthology of youth poetry at the Bay Area Book Festival in May of 2017, titled First Edition.
UCIV & Community Safety

UCIV is a Community Safety Organization providing Non-Police affiliated support services to the Isla Vista area. Zion served as the organization’s first Publicity Director during Spring of 2023 as part of his Professional Writing Minor Internship.
Zion attended nearly every single shift! His responsibilities involved working Fridays and Saturdays from 9pm to 12am with fellow UCIV Board Members as well as typing out weekly press releases based on each experience. He also attended weekly meetings on Mondays in order to go over the weekly press releases. Providing Content for the UCIV website, UCIV handbook, and UCIV Instagram are also among the responsibilities of the Publicity Director. Zion completed a total of 90 hours working with the organization!
